Both sets of Gaels, Irish and Scottish wore whatever was useful, although this image shows a predominance of tartan. Yet it specifically says "Hibernia". Could it be that the illustrator knew their geographic origin? Or was Hibernia presumed over Caledonia? The Irish also wore caubeens, the same kind of hat as the Scottish (blue) bonnet. Is there a regimental unit number which is known for these mercenaries? Note too the three crowned flag, which is probably Swedish, but might also be the flag of Munster, Ireland.eoghanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03598984230324624981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-211483675455827250.post-84467677717683136442018-03-09T17:13:42.492-06:002018-03-09T17:13:42.492-06:00John, don't tempt us. But I still have a few loose ends to tie -up for this and other projects. I have a couple of Foundry Highlander Units, and the Royalist Cavalry to share, as well as a few command bases. If I do come back to the period I'd like to add a third Irish regiment for the early battles and some more highlanders, but neither of us are that impressed by the available ranges of 28mm highlanders. Still holding out hope that one of the Perry's will knock out 2 or 3 packs to round off the ECW Scots range. The figure painting work is outstanding.
Your research on Scots history is very interesting. I have a question: I model 28mm ECW and do Genealogy. Have you ever come across the following: After the battle of Dunbar 1650, there were so many Scots prisoners that Cromwell's army was at a loss how to disperse them. There are reports that (Quote) "Another 500 were indentured the following spring to Marshall Turenne for service in the French Army and were fighting seven years later against the Spanish, side by side with a contingent of English soldiers sent over by Cromwell."
In Genealogy, I've learned that history takes some unusual turns. Including the 1500+ bodies buried below Durham church, that only in the last 5 years has DNA been used to ID them. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thank you Bruce Rutherford.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07335782284367405278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-211483675455827250.post-41347333725540176342016-04-08T16:16:04.677-05:002016-04-08T16:16:04.677-05:00Hi there,
I've just read your article and tho...Hi there,

I've just read your article and thought that it was quite interesting - something different to what I'm used to. I stumbled across your article because I was doing some research for my familia and when I read your article, I immediately wanted to let you know that a small part of what you wrote was inaccurate: the Mermaid is holding a swan's head and an otter's head. Not a snake's head. The otter has remained as one of the most prominent symbols in the Balfour family (of which I am part of - the Dutch branch: Balfoort). The otter is a symbol of Siward, the Earl of Northumbria, when he slew an enemy of his named Otto. Otto's head was severed from his body and Siward kept the head. Otto's family however required his head back so that they could bury him properly (sending him to the afterlife properly), and Siward refused. So the family bargained with him and, for Otto's head, Siward was given the lands owned by the family. Little did anyone know though, the lands that Siward acquired through this deal had hundreds, if not thousands, of otters scattered all over the place (rivers, streams, hills, etc.) And that's why we have Otters in the Balfour family-crest - because Michael 1st, Balfour of Burleigh believed that he was a descendant of Siward, and being taught the lesson of Siward's battle against Otto, Michael was inspired to put Otters on his coat of arms. Also had a good rummage round the village and can see how steep the rise was out of the boggy low ground between the church hill and garlic Hill. The modern town has spread pretty significantly into this drained low-lying area (all relative I suppose), especially the very new housing in Montrose's Hollow or Dell (can't recall name). We are planning a doocot (even though I have read the present doocot dates from late 17th century) as Castle Hil would not seem complete without it!
elcid1099https://www.blogger.com/profile/04826813158605053140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-211483675455827250.post-28629462270148130482015-08-09T14:12:04.166-05:002015-08-09T14:12:04.166-05:00Hi Anonymous, apologies did not see your question....Hi Anonymous, apologies did not see your question.
